Music plays a big part in the life of our school. Although we are a small school we have a choir and an orchestra, both run by Mrs Hewitt. Our orchestra meets before school on a Monday morning and has a string, woodwind and percussion section as well as keyboard. Our Key Stage 2 choir has performed at a number of local events, as well as at The Tower of London. This March they will be performing at the Hertfordshire Schools Gala at The Royal Albert Hall.
As well as whole class ukulele lessons for Key Stage 2, we are very fortunate to be able to offer individual or small group musical instrument tuition in piano, violin, flute, recorder, guitar and ukulele. Mrs Hannah Hewitt teaches flute and recorder, Mrs Sam Jellet teaches violin and piano and Miss Becky Draper teaches guitar, ukulele and piano.
At our annual St Michael’s Summer Music Concert all children who learn a musical instrument have an opportunity to perform a solo piece. Each term we hold a Music Assembly which again gives the children an opportunity to perform to a friendly audience. We now have so many children learning a musical instrument that this year we have had to hold two separate Music Assemblies - one for more established players and one for beginners,
Many of our children have sat ABRSM music exams at school. Last summer we had flautists and violinists sitting exams, ranging from Grade 1 flute to Grade 4 violin.
