Football Friendlies...

On Thursday 25th February the football team played two matches against local schools at Monks Walk secondary school. We won one and lost one scoring five goals in total. The team was captained by Jonathan Whiteway and we had two boys who made their debuts for the first team. Tom Cox was excellent in goal and pulled off an incredible penalty save in the first match. The local press were invited to take photos of the event so look out for some action shots in this week’s paper. Team sheet: Tom Cox, Dylan Dhesi, George Harris, Dylan Taylor, Ieuan Bryant-Fowler, Jonathan Whiteway, Billy Currell and Harry Phillips.

Indoor Athletics District Event Success

As the St Michael's boys and girls indoor athletics teams both qualified for the District competition, they travelled by mini-bus to Sir Fred's school on Thursday 4th February 2016.

The teams represented Monks Walk family against seven other area teams. The children had been training hard and practicing regularly in preparation for the harder competition.

Individual results are yet to be received but notable outstanding performances were:

  • 1st place for the boys under/over relay,
  • Elliot C, Iuean and Jonathan W's baton changeovers,
  • Maya's 70 in 30secs speedbounce and 12m javelin throw.

Every competitor fought hard for the best result in their events and with great anticipation the results were announced. Unfortunately the girls were pipped with the top three schools being Oak View, St Mary's and winners Applecroft. Then the boys results were announced, and after a very noisy hall all afternoon, there was not a sound to be heard....

Third place - Applecroft (gasp!), second place - St Mary's (shock, gasp, hope...) and the winners ....ST MICHAEL'S!!!!! Raptuous applause.

The boys therefore go through to the County final at Wodon Park, Ware in March.

Thoroughly WELL DESERVED!

Mr Mallon & Mrs Deane

Indoor Athletics Event, Wed 27th Jan.

Elm class attended an Indoor Athletics event as Gosling which was run by Year 7 Sports Leaders from Monks Walk School. The afternoon comprised of track and field events with six other local primary schools (Oaklands, St John’s Digswell, Templewood, Harwood Hill, Homerswood and Welwyn St Mary’s).

The track events consisted or 5x1 obstacles, 2x2 and 5x1 Hurdles relays. The field was multi-disciplined with throws, jumps, balance and speed bounce activities. Each child rotated around every event gaining skills and experiences of all disciplines. The afternoon finished with a dream team children’s team competing against the sports leaders. Special mention goes to Archie Breakwell and Harriet Utting for representing St Michael’s. The afternoon was lots of fun with lots of energy expended and very loud with lots of cheering throughout. Matthew Lewis and Abbi Dowett achieved the awards for being the most involved, encouraging and supportive team members. Mrs Cox and Mrs Deane.

Speed Stacking Success!

SS4

St Michael’s Woolmer Green had huge success at the recent speed stacking competition held at Knightsfield school in Welwyn Garden city. Our team consisted of 4 girls and 4 boys, and all of the team tried so hard as they competed in the 3-3-3 and the 3-6-3, as well as girls, boys and whole team relays. They did St Michael's proud and qualified for the district final which was held on Friday 22nd January where the mixed team (all 8 team members) triumphed! They came first out of 8 schools in the district and will now go on to represent Welwyn/Hatfield in the county final sometime in March. Watch this space! Huge congratulations to all the winners, and a big thank you to Mrs Gloyn whose after school club created the winners! Please see the Gallery for more photos.
